چکیده

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is expected to detect N ∼ 22×10 close white dwarf binaries in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) through their gravitational radiation with signal-to-noise ratios greater than ∼10 in observational durations of 3 years or more. In addition to chirp mass, location on the sky, and other binary parameters, the distance to each binary is an independent parameter that can be extracted from an analysis of gravitational waves from these binaries. Using a sample of binaries, one can establish the mean distance to the LMC as well as the variance of this distance. Assuming no confusion noise at frequencies above 2 mHz, LISA might determine the LMC distance to ∼ 4.5 √ N/22% and the line of sight extent of LMC to ∼ 15(N/22)%, relative to its distance, at the one-sigma confidence. These estimates are competitive to some of the proposed direct geometric techniques to measure LMC distance in future with missions such as SIM and GAIA. Eccentric Double White Dwarfs as Lisa Sources in Globular Clusters

We consider the formation of double white dwarfs (DWDs) through dynamical interactions in globular clusters. Such interactions can give rise to eccentric DWDs, in contrast to the exclusively circular population expected to form in the Galactic disk. We show that for a 5 yr Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission and distances as far as the Large Magellanic Cloud, multiple harmonics fr...

Distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud

We remeasure the “light echo” times to the near and far side of the ring around SN 1987A using the method of Gould (1995) and the new reductions of the original UV spectra by Sonneborn et al. (1996). We obtain an upper limit to the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud μLMC < 18.37 ± 0.04. This result is very close to Gould’s original value, and contradicts claims that the new spectra measurem...

The distance modulus of the Small Magellanic Cloud based on double-mode Cepheids

We employ the very recent photometric data of the ogle project together with stellar atmosphere and linear pulsation models to determine the distance modulus of the Small Magellanic Cloud from its double-mode Cepheids. Based on the requirement of obtaining the same distance modulus DM from the two types of variables (fundamental & first overtone and first & second overtone), we get DM = 19.05 m...
